All Treats, No Tricks: Highlights from the First Half of Our Fall 2024 Tour!

As we near Halloween, the season of jack-o-lanterns and costumes, it’s a good time to remind everyone that treats and scares come in many forms. We here at Funding the Future believe that Financial Literacy can mean the difference between getting Tricked (payday loans and high credit card interest rates) and getting Treated (savings accounts and Roth IRA’s).

Learning how to spend less and keep more of your money doesn’t have to be scary. Carter Hulsey has been spreading this word to 16 schools in 3 states over 3 weeks. The lucky states this time were Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado. He and his bandmates, Taylor and Cody, were able to reach 5,885 students so far on this tour.

It’s an incredible experience to watch fidgety students, eager to get their school day over and resume staring at screens or chatting with friends, quiet down when the band starts to play. They cheer and applaud the live music, quickly realizing that these band members have come to entertain them.

By the time the set is finished, the audience is usually enrapt and ready to hear what Carter has to tell them. He starts with tales of his own financial missteps early in his career, along with stories of professional athletes who have nothing to show after years of earning high incomes, before moving onto the success stories of famous entertainers who not only invested wisely, but were then able to share the wealth in communities across the nation.

It is a joy to sit amongst the students and watch this transformation. We may not reach every young person in that auditorium/gymnasium/cafeteria, but each convert will spread the word. Just making them aware that there are options is often the first step.
